Building on the skills MacLachlan students have gained in their primary years, children are ready to enter the next phase of their education. While continuing in the same structure of small classes and a strong homeroom influence, students will become increasingly more independent as the curriculum becomes more challenging.
These are crucial years in consolidating character development and value systems. Our teachers have a wise and respectful understanding of their students in these sometimes difficult pre-adolescent years. They know how to act firmly yet with compassion. The principles that support the philosophy of education at MacLachlan are seen as providing a solid foundation for the very best learning environment for students in this division.
Junior Curriculum Grades 4 to 6
Increasing sophistication in written expression output, higher order thinking skills and reading comprehension typify the expectations. The homework requirement becomes more demanding and development of independence receives greater focus. Assessment and evaluation continues as an integral element in all the work accomplished and students begin to take greater involvement in these procedures through participation and self-evaluation.
Public speaking and debating skills begin to be integrated into the Language Arts Curriculum. The Everyday Mathematics programme continues to build on the skills gained in the preceding years and contributes to the cross-curricular design of cognitive development. Increasing expectations and encouragement for students to participate in external competition is a feature of these years.
Crossing all curricular areas, our state-of-the-art information technology facilities provide innovative and sophisticated development in the use of technology. Enhancing learning and higher order thinking skills, the use of information technology is embedded in the curriculum. The exciting studies in Robotic Science and Intelligent Systems build on the skills developed in the Primary years. As students begin to view themselves as confident, competent individuals, their learning flourishes.
Intermediate Curriculum Grades 7 to 8
The intermediate programme builds on the skills learned in the junior division with some additions. Formal studies in History and Geography begin in grade 7 and 8. Guidance becomes a prominent feature of the Intermediate timetable. Preparation for high school study is consolidated at this level and students commence study in the enriched Advanced Placement university acceleration curriculum in chosen areas.
Formal examinations occur at this level. A considerable degree of guidance in study skill techniques is provided to assist students in the transition to such formal procedures. Parents are encouraged to participate in this endeavour by attending with their children special workshops conducted by our Guidance department. Developing good study skills and study habits lay the groundwork for success in the secondary level of our students' education.
